Back and neck pain may originate from damage to the muscles, nerves, bones, joints, or other structures in the spine. This pain is one of the most common medical problems experienced by most people at some time in their life. It can be acute, lasting from a few days to a few weeks, or chronic, lasting for more than three months.

Both back pain and neck pain can be managed with various treatment options, including exercises, physical therapy, injections, and pain medications. When these options are unable to alleviate the pain, it's time to consider surgical options.

Spine Surgery

The thought of having surgery can be stressful and overwhelming. The goal of spine surgery is to alleviate symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness caused by spinal disorders, and to restore the normal function and stability of the spine. Our care team works together to develop a personalized plan of care to make sure you have the best outcomes after spine surgery.

Surgical Treatment Options

Spinal Disc Herniation

Disc herniation is a condition where the central nucleus inside a spinal disc protrudes out of its normal position, often compressing or irritating nearby nerves.

Causes of Disc Herniation:

  • Aging, injury, or trauma may cause the annulus fibrosus to tear, resulting in protrusion of the nucleus pulposus. This may compress the spinal nerves and/or spinal canal. The bulging disc may even break open, releasing the gelatinous material, which is a chemical irritant, causing inflammation of the spinal nerves.
  • Obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking increase the risk of Lumbar disc herniation.

Motion Preservation

Motion preservation surgery or Motion Preservation Spine Surgery (MPSS) is a relatively new surgical method employed as an alternative to standard spinal surgeries, such as spinal fusion and disc replacement surgery.

Motion preservation spine surgery may be recommended as an alternative treatment for various spine disorders, including:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sciatic nerve pain
  • Spondylosis
  • Nerve damage
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Compression fractures in the spine

Spinal Deformity Correction

Spine deformity can be defined as an abnormality in the shape, curvature, and flexibility of the spine. When the curves are exaggerated, pronounced problems can occur such as back pain, breathing difficulties, and fatigue as well as nerve pain.

Spine deformity surgery may be recommended as a treatment for:

  • Scoliosis
  • Kyphosis

Spine Trauma

Spine trauma refers to any injury or damage to the spinal cord, vertebral column, or surrounding tissues that can cause a range of symptoms and disabilities, such as changes in sensation, strength, and other body functions.

Causes of Spine Trauma:

  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls
  • High-impact sports
  • Shallow water diving activities
  • Incidents of violence such as a gunshot or stabbing
